John Balka plays the popular Toccata in B minor by Eugene Gigout on the Fisk organ in Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas, Texas USA. The late John Balka will be remembered for the energy and enthusiasm he brought to his music, and hence, to the places and to the people with whom he worked in a number of music posts in Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, California and Texas. Two of his career highlights were his tenures at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco and the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Austin, Texas. He is missed, but is fondly remembered in this video, produced by Pro Organo's Frederick Hohman on 26 August 1997. This episode of the Midnight Pipes series was made in conjunction with a recording session conducted at Meyerson Symphony Center during the same week, when John Balka recorded the program for his PRO ORGANO all-French organ music CD entitled "The Angel with the Trumpet" (Pro Organo cat # CD 7032). That popular CD is now sold out and is presently unavailable. The complete 30-minute video with John Balka by Meyerson Symphony Center is still available in its original VHS Hi-Fi NTSC format. As one can see from the video, John Balka has no fear of the exertion when playing with all manuals coupled together. When keys of upper manuals move together with the same keys of the lower manual on which the artist plays, this is a visual indication to the viewer that divisions have been coupled together at that point in the performance. Similarly, lower notes on the manuals moving indicate a mechanical coupling of those divisions to the pedals.
